Heeey, there, Zag, man, how's it going? Look, you have got to get here with the rest of us already, we've been saving you a spot! Let me see what I can do, make life a little sweeter for you in the meantime!
~ Dionysus

Dionysus is the Olympian God of wine and madness, and cousin to Zagreus. He offers boons to Zagreus revolving around his signature Status Curse, Hangover, slowing, and stunning enemies, as well as various drinking-themed Boons.

Dionysus offers strong damage over time abilities on nearly all his offensive boons. However, he can also give Zagreus strong utility abilities in the forms of stuns, slows, heals and health, damage reduction effects, and items.

His signature Status Curse is Hangover, which deals continuous damage to afflicted enemies every half second. Hangover can be stacked onto an enemy up to a base amount of 5 times, and stacks wear off one at a time after 4 seconds.

Characteristics and Personality[ | ]

Dionysus is the god of wine, revelry, and madness. He is usually very receptive, fun-loving, and playful, and he joins in helping Zagreus try to escape because he finds Zag entertaining to watch while drinking a good wine. Even his speech tends to be a little slurred, as if he's always a little drunk.

Good-natured, Dionysus is probably the friendliest among his Olympian companions, and he only cares about one thing: having fun. He uses informal terms to address his cousin, like "guy" or "Prince Z" while genuinely helping Zagreus while teaching him the art of playing pranks with his new bro. Although some family members think that Dionysus is only participating because he considers it all a "festival," he genuinely thinks discovering a long-lost relative is cause for celebration.

The god Dionysus seems to take things slowly, but is also the "God of Mischief" and may suggest to his cousin a "harmless fun." Although he is not Hermes, he is chatty. His calm and relaxed nature can be fun, but on the other hand, he experiences intense emotional ups and downs and can be seen crying, getting angry, forgetting everything, recounting his distorted version of things, and it may not have been exactly as he remembers. This could be one possible side effect of filling up his cup too much to forget the pain.

Despite his carefree and slovenly image, the Party God and the youngest among the Olympians actually resents being considered ineloquent and underestimated. He has a reputation for attending family meetings completely drunk. However, his power cannot be underestimated, as Dionysus can easily get everyone on his side by getting them drunk.

Most beloved by mortals, Achilles notes that Dionysus is the only unpretentious god on Olympus who genuinely seems to like mortals. He acts casually and friendly towards Zagreus, possibly because he was once a demigod.

Physical description[ | ]

The god of parties is uninhibited and wears a short, wide, smoky purple chiton. His sprite poses him in a way that shows off his chiseled body. He wears gold bracelets on his wrists and thighs and adorns his shoulders with vines and animal skin. His garments often emulate the plant and bunches of grapes in the curls of his hair. In his right hand he carries his staff of fennel adorned with a pine cone, the so-called thyrsus—symbol of prosperity, fertility, and hedonism. Dionysus is a dark, shiny-skinned man with a disoriented or in-stasis expression.

History[ | ]

Before Hades[ | ]

It is said that the birth of Dionysus was quite difficult, being a demigod, he was born extremely weak. To save him, Zeus sewed him into his thigh, and he grew there until he was ready to be born a second time. After his birth, he was chased and hunted by Queen Hera, and he faced many challenges in his early years.

Dionysus eventually wandered the world with a group of drunken men and wild women, teaching people how to cultivate grapes and make wine. His followers formed choruses of satyrs and wandered in groups, engaging in revelry and experiencing ecstatic states.

Hestia offered Dionysus her place on Mount Olympus, not out of pity, but because she had given up her position a long time ago.

Hades[ | ]

Dionysus will eventually reach out to Zagreus and lend his help in the prince's escape attempts. Having grown in a very secluded place, Zagreus is surprised at first to experience revelry, even if minimal.

After Zagreus reachs the surface for the first time, Dionysus will comment how the gods in Olympus could feel his presence, but then suddenly ceased to do so. Nonetheless, the god doesn't let that stop him from trying to help his dear cousin.

Somehow, Dionysus came to know Orpheus hasn't been feeling in his best lately, and so, to cheer him up, he asks Zagreus to come up with a tale about how they're one and the same, hoping this will bring creativity and lift the spirits of the musician. In the end, the prank got out of hand, but Dionysus is satisfied nonetheless.

Epilogue[ | ]

In the Epilogue, Dionysus will show up at the Olympus family reunion party completely drunk and empty the whole stach of drinks the House had prepared.

Affinity[ | ]

If given Nectar, Dionysus will give you the Overflowing Cup.

Dionysus's affinity gauge is maxed out at 7 hearts.

Favor[ | ]

Dionysus's favor requires forging bonds with at least 6 different characters, and gifting a minimum of 10 Ambrosia to any number of characters.

Codex entry[ | ]

Codex
'...Perhaps I ought to feel a kinship with this easygoing son of Zeus, for it is said that he has some mortal blood in him, not just divinity. This may explain why he, among Olympians, is so well-loved by mortal-kind; because he loves them back, bringing to them more joy than suffering, for the most part. Being rather unlike the other gods in this regard, he nonetheless maintains a careful distance from the Underworld, generally severing his ties with all his mortal followers upon the moment of their deaths. Why confront the woes of the dead when you can live in eternal feast?'

Trivia[ | ]

  • Dionysus is a popular god among mortals.
    • The fact that he holds affection for mortals might stem from his mythological story, as he was once a demigod who became a full-fledged god upon consuming ambrosia.
  • Chaos mentions enjoying watching Dionysus because, much like Zagreus, they find entertainment in Dionysus's unpredictability.
