HadesHades II

Death Defiance is an ability that can be unlocked at the Altar of Ashes with the Death Arcana Card. In gameplay terms, it is basically "extra lives". Upon taking lethal damage, Melinoë instead loses one Death Defiance, briefly becomes invulnerable, and restores 40% Health and Magick. The health restored can be enhanced via boons. If she receives fatal damage without any charges of Death Defiance left, she will leave and return back to The Crossroads.

Up to three charges of Death Defiance can be unlocked at the Altar. Charges are displayed as icons above the health bar, and are consumed one at a time from right to left, leaving a slot. Charges can be replenished in that slot, up to the ranks unlocked at the altar, or added through different ways.

Replenishing Charges[]

If Melinoë used up a charge of Death Defiance in a run, she can replenish that slot through the following ways:

  • Buying a Kiss of Styx from a Well of Charon or a Shrine of Hermes.
  • Choosing Echo's, Survive Survive Survive will replenish charges with her own unique Death Defiance.
  • Choosing Life Saving from Narcissus.
  • Choosing Renewed Faith from Athena will replenish all spent charges with new ones that grant an additional +20%/+30%/+40%/+50% Life restoration.

Adding Charges[]

Besides the Death card upgrades, Melinoë can add a Death Defiance (i.e., gain a charge with its own slot) in a run through the following way:

  • Equipping Schelemeus' Keepsake, Luckier Tooth, provides a charge and its own slot of Death Defiance, although this restores a flat amount of Health health as opposed to a percentage. This charge is the last to be used as the leftmost icon, and its benefit (including empty slot) will be lost when switching the Keepsake out.
  • Equipping Moros' Keepsake, Engraved Pin, grants an additional charge of Death Defiance with its own dedicated slot, which replenishes in each Location. However, this charge only restores upon meeting its specific condition, and the healing amount varies based on the Keepsake's effect (30/45/60/90Health) rather than a percentage. The charge is always used first, appearing as the rightmost icon, and will be lost if the Keepsake is swapped out.
    • Engraved Pin's effect does not apply to the bonus damage from Last Gasp.
    • Currently Bugged: Engraved Pin inconsistently interacts with Strength. You still receive the +25% damage bonus, but the damage reduction effect does not apply.
  • Choosing Chaos's Legendary Boon, Defiance. Their legendary boon will only be offered if you already have a boon from them and can be offered more than once.
  • Choosing Echo's, Survive Survive Survive will grant new charges that grant 50% Health and Magick but will restore less when charges are used.
  • Equpping Toula will grant one extra charge but only restores 10 Health and Magick.
    • The restoration effects of this charge can be increased when increasing Toula's Heart Bond by an additional +10/+20/+30.
    • Circe's Chants to the Bewitched upgrade grants an extra charge from Toula, totaling 2 if unused.
  • Choosing Athena's Boon, Stalwart Stand, grants a +1 charge that replenishes in each Location but Primes 150/125/100/75 Magick.

These methods can extend the maximum charges on top of the slots unlocked by the Altar for that night.
