ā€œ Oh, well, isn't this marvelous! How you've grown, little miss! Do you remember Circe the Enchantress still? Ah? Oh, no matter, hahaha. Not the circumstances for small talk! Show me your palms. ā€ž
~ Circe

Circe is an enchantress and daughter of Helios renowned for her vast knowledge of potions, herbs and for transforming her enemies, or those who offend her, into animals. During Odysseus' journey, he encountered Circe on her island of Aeaea where Circe transformed his crew into swine. Odysseus was able to convince her to change his crew back into men and lived with her for a year. The two ended up having a brief affair during Odysseus' stay that ended when he left to continue on his journey back home.

Circe appears in Hades II and offers her Changes & Fortunes to Melinoƫ in her fight against Chronos. She can be encountered on the Rift of Thessaly.

Characteristics and Personality[]

Circe acts as a sort of a godmother to Melinoƫ, while imparting her knowledge of ancient magic as an additional aid in battles. She behaves like an aunt, being talkative and displaying great familiarity, despite Melinoƫ not having seen her since infancy, affectionately referring to her as Molly. She mentions that Hecate was akin to a mother to her and seems to regard her as a model witch, thus she diligently watches over Melinoƫ.

She consistently maintains a cheerful demeanor and can often be observed happily reciting the ingredients for her next dubious transfiguration potion. Furthermore, she exhibits considerable hypocrisy, particularly concerning her niece Medea, fearing the possibility of her adopting bad habits, despite not being the best influence herself. Nonetheless, she genuinely cares for her.

Physical description[]

Circe is depicted as a voluptuous woman. Her eyes gleam with a bright golden hue, similar to her Titan aunt Selene and her father Helios. She has full, reddish-tinged hair adorned with cat ears and a garland.

She wears a sand-colored dress decorated with moons and it's topped by cheetah skin, held in place with a golden belt. Her armbands are also made of cheetah skin. The front depicts silk below decorated with a similar symbol as the Silver Sisters', but in gold instead of silver on top of it. She wears other golden jewelry, like her choker, bracelets and earrings. She's seen with crystals, feathers and other items on her belt. Her wand is in her right hand, and she uses it to levitate some crystals. She also has a tail, or some fur to give that effect, behind her.

Hades II[]

Circe is encountered by Melinoƫ in the Rift of Thessaly on her island of Aeaea. She explains that she was sent by Hecate to monitor the situation near Mount Olympus. Circe will then provide her Fortunes to Melinoƫ whenever she visits Aeaea.

Book of Shadows Entry[]

'"Change is an inevitability, certainly for mortals, even for gods. Yet there are those who resist change with the ferocity of a caged beast. Others welcome it, and others still seek mastery of it.

Our capacity to be and our capacity to change are intertwined."'

Affinity[]

If given Nectar, Circe will give you the Crystal Figurine.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek Mythology, she is one of the two deities who transformed Scylla into a monster, the other being the consort of Poseidon, Amphitrite.
    • Circe transformed Scylla due to having the love of the sea-God Glaucus whom Circe was in love with.
    • Scylla's Book of Shadows entry states that she was cursed by a witch, implying that Circe was the one who cursed her in the Hades universe. Although the entry does not state the identity of this witch.
    • During the Warsong Update, the art on the Arcana Cards were revealed. Circe’s card depicts her in the past, standing over a younger Scylla, who is transforming into a sea monster. This confirms that Circe was in fact the one who cursed Scylla.
  • Another documented parentage of Circe has her and Medea as the daughters of Hecate and AeĆ«tes.
    • The version of Hecate being her mother is referenced in one of her dialogues, where she says Hecate is like a mother to her.
  • Circe's design references the known descriptions of her:
    • Her golden eyes are mentioned by Apollonius in Argonautica, where they wrote she had "flashing golden eyes that shot out rays of light".
    • Her red hair comes from the description of the author of Argonautica Orphica, who says she has "hair like fiery rays".
    • Her feline connotations refer to the predatory female archetype she represents.
  • Circe has an aversion to Moly. This plant was created from the blood of Picolous, a giant who escaped the war and fled to Circe's island, tried to chase her away, but was killed there by Helios. Moly is said to be white, either because of the Sun that killed the giant or because that's the color Circe turned to as she watched the events unfold. It was also the plant Hermes later gave Odysseus to protect the hero against her spells.
  • Circe and Medea seemingly represent opposite aspects of magic - Circe represents classical witchcraft, being proficient in "earthly" crafts, herbology, arcana, etc. This is also alluded to in her design, as her primary tools are a magic wand and crystals. Circe also might refer to "white" magic, with her musical theme being jolly and harmonious and having some Christmas-like vibe, while also being the same musical theme as Medea's, but with a different mood.
